Flooring FAQs

What areas does Prestige Flooring serve?

We serve the entire Bristol area including South Gloucestershire

What is the difference between luxury vinyl tiles and laminate flooring?

Luxury vinyl tiles are made from PVC which is softer to touch whilst being firm and extremely waterproof. Laminate is made from layers of thin wood and fibreboard which is generally more rigid which means it can be installed without being glued to the ground.

Can I have hardwood flooring with underfloor heating?

Yes, this is perfectly fine but you must use engineered hardwood as this particular kind of hardwood flooring option is constructed to react to heat and remain stable without warping or changing shape. Pure hardwood planks would not be able to cope with the regular temperature changes without contorting and bending.

What kind of surface finishes are available for hardwood flooring?

Depending on the specific look you wish to go for there are many options such as:

Tung Oil Sealed – This brings out a low-gloss natural looking finish that enhances the grain characteristics of the wood.

Hard-Wax Oil Seal – Provides a warm protected finish and is easy to apply. This is a great option for wooden flooring in high areas of traffic and where stains and spills are likely to occur.

Water-Based Polyurethane Seal – This is one of the most used finishes on most hardwood floors. It has a light finish which protects and dries very rapidly.

Will heavy furniture mark luxury vinyl flooring?

Luxury vinyl tiles are soft due as they are made from multiple layers of polyvinyl chloride. The weight of heavy furniture being concentrated over small areas (eg a sofa leg) can make marks in the tiles if enough weight is exerted. We recommend putting down pads which will diffuse the weight and protect your vinyl flooring tiles.

What are the different kinds of carpet fibres available?

Nylon – A great hard wearing option that has the ability to resist getting compact by heavy traffic or furniture. Nylon carpets are often used in busy areas such as lobbies, corridors or halls.

Polyester – This material is hailed for its stain resistance and ability to retain colour over time.

Wool – Wool is a natural material made from lams. It is luxuriously soft and tough which makes it suitable for high traffic areas also. It feels heavenly underfoot but will require regular maintenance

Can Karndean be laid over underfloor heating?

Yes, luxury vinyl tiles can safely absorb heat without changing shape or warping.

Do you offer residential carpet cleaning services?

Unfortunately not at this time.

What is underlay?

This is the smooth thin material that sits between your flooring and the ground. It is used to smooth out the surface of the floor so that your vinyl tiles, wood, laminate or carpet can sit evenly across the floor with full structural stability. The underlay material will depend on the type of flooring but types include DITRA membrane, Foam Laminate Underlayment, Felt Hardwood Floor Underlayment or rubber carpet underlayment.
